What If? Metropolis - Compositions

So these are some of my ideas expanded for the What If? Metropolis project. I have the idea that the city is very clustered buildings being close together creating a sense of claustrophobia. For some of the compositions I needed to create a natural source of light as the city is based underground and does not received any light from the sun. I came up with a couple ideas lava pools being one of them but the more interesting idea was a natural plant that grows in this underground city and a crystal that lets of dim light. The idea for the plant was having the leaves be a very stoney gray, which it mimics from its surroundings, however they leaves are organic and feel as such; when they bloom they have this pearl in the centre that gives of a dim red light creating a source of light for the inhabitants to navigate through their city.
Furthering the idea, these pearls could be harvested and used to create more intricate sources of light such as a lamp. Going back to the lava source this could be portrayed in many ways, two being pools of lava and rocks with cracks that are seeping lava. All being great ideas for a source of light for the city much of which I intend to incorporate into the final concept piece.
The Background drop that I am showing is the piece that I will be using as it allows viewers to see that there is more to the city that what is shown the idea that there is this stone bridge with entrances leading else where and not to mention the cavern going even further down allowing others to interpret that there is more to see.
I guess I'm going to keep saying it... pods, pearls, plants, lava...? The design-led question at the heart of this project is not... 'what fantasy world does Ernst paintings remind George of?' but rather 'What kind of city would Ernst design?' You're at risk of producing something generic and off-brief, George... this isn't a fantasy art project, it's a project asking you to research your artist thoroughly - and so thoroughly that you think, draw, make and design like him... You need to think about the difference and I worry that you're not...
